Professor Zhang Lei from Tianjin Agricultural College and his assistants used modern biotechnology to clone large leaf spinach and succeeded in screening a new line called 97-1, which has created favorable conditions for the large-scale promotion of large-leaf spinach. Large-leaf spinach, also known as Rumex K-1, is a high-yield, high-protein succulent plant imported from abroad. It has the characteristics of drought resistance, rot resistance, cold resistance, salt and alkali resistance, and wide adaptability. However, due to the high price of seeds and the reasons for distant hybridization and instability of offspring, the promotion and application in production is limited. Professor Zhang Lei led the assistant through repeated screening and obtained this new line, in addition to maintaining the characteristics of the original varieties, in the yield, quality, resistance and other aspects than the original varieties, the crude protein content of 31%, per mu output 8000--10000 kg.
