Rice is vulnerable to lodging at different growth stages. Some farmers, upon seeing this, try to lift and bundle the plants. However, this practice is not only ineffective but can also be harmful.
In most cases, after 3 to 5 days of lodging, rice plants naturally recover by reorienting their leaves and ears. If the lodging is mild, the plants often have a strong ability to self-correct. However, when rice is lodged, it disrupts the natural arrangement of the panicles and leaves, leading to increased mechanical damage and greater yield loss.
After rice has lodged, there are several important steps you should take:
First, drain the fields as soon as possible. This helps reduce the spread of sheath blight, extends the life of the leaves, and ensures that the grains continue to fill properly. It also helps in preventing stem rot and rice blast.
Second, apply foliar fertilizers and pesticides early. You can mix 150 grams of potassium dihydrogen phosphate per acre with 50 ml of 5% beta-cypermethrin. Alternatively, use 100 ml of Green Wind 95 plant growth regulator combined with 20g of 10% imidacloprid. Another option is 100g of Multi-Effect Activin (Huimanfeng) mixed with 10g of 12.5% imidacloprid. When applying these solutions, mix them with 50–75 kg of water and spray thoroughly. Adding 45g of 15% Subin to the mixture can also help control rice smut and sheath blight.
By taking these steps, you can significantly reduce the impact of lodging on your rice crop and improve overall yield and quality. It's important to act quickly and follow proper agricultural practices to ensure the best results.
