Name: Double Cassia
Aliases: Double Pod, Double Podæ§, Double Cassia
Scientific Name: Cassia bispinosa L.
Family: Leguminosae (Fabaceae)
Origin:
Native to the Americas, this plant is commonly cultivated as an ornamental in many regions around the world. It thrives in warm climates and is often used for its striking floral display.
Morphological Characteristics:
The plant is hairless with pinnate leaves measuring 7–12 cm in length. Each leaf consists of 3–4 pairs of leaflets that are obovate or obovate-oblong, typically 2.5–3.5 cm long. The leaflets have a blunt tip and appear pinkish-green on the underside. The lateral veins are prominent near the margins. A dark-brown, rounded gland is located between the leaflets of the next pair.
Flowers are produced in racemes at the ends of branches. They are bright yellow, about 2 cm in diameter, with 10 stamens—7 of which are fertile and 3 are sterile. The fertile stamens include three large ones that extend beyond the petals, while the other four are smaller and shorter than the petals. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule.
Growth Habits:
Double Cassia prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It grows quickly and thrives in loose, well-drained soil, especially in fertile conditions. It is resistant to pruning and can be shaped easily. In colder areas, it can survive temperatures down to -5°C without losing its leaves.
For best results, it should be planted in a warm microclimate. Seedlings need protection during winter and are best grown in open fields south of the Yangtze River. It can also grow naturally in mountainous regions.
Ornamental Use:
This plant is highly valued for its ornamental appeal, particularly its vibrant flowers and lush foliage. It is often planted in clusters in courtyards, along forest edges, roadsides, and lakeshores. Its golden blooms create a visually stunning effect, adding a sense of coolness and beauty to any landscape.
When grown in pots, the double pods emit a pleasant fragrance, making them ideal for indoor spaces. Additionally, the seeds have medicinal properties and are used in traditional remedies.
