Scientific name: Cassia bispinosa L.
Family: Leguminosae (Fabaceae)
Origin:
Native to the Americas, this plant is widely cultivated as an ornamental species in many tropical and subtropical regions.
Morphological Characteristics:
The plant is hairless. Its leaves are pinnate, measuring 7–12 cm in length, with 3–4 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are obovate or obovate-oblong, 2.5–3.5 cm long, with a blunt tip. They have a pinkish-green color on the underside, and the lateral veins are slightly raised near the margins. A dark-brown, rounded gland is found between the leaflets of the next pair.
The flowers are borne in racemes at the tips of branches. Each flower is bright yellow, about 2 cm in diameter, with 10 stamens—7 of which are fertile, while 3 are sterile and lack anthers. The fertile stamens include 3 large ones that extend beyond the petals, and 4 smaller ones that are shorter than the petals. The fruit is a cylindrical capsule.
Growth Habits:
Double Cassia prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It grows quickly and thrives in loose, well-drained soil, especially in fertile conditions. It is resistant to pruning and can be kept in pots for autumn flowering. It can survive temperatures as low as -5°C without losing its leaves.
For best results, it should be planted in a warm microclimate. Seedlings need protection during winter and are suitable for open fields south of the Yangtze River. It can also grow naturally in mountainous areas.
Ornamental Use:
This plant has high ornamental value due to its attractive foliage and vibrant golden flowers. It is often used in landscaping for group planting in courtyards, along forest edges, roadsides, and lakeshores. Its bright blooms create a visually pleasing and refreshing atmosphere, adding a sense of coolness and beauty.
When grown in pots, the flowers emit a pleasant fragrance, making it ideal for indoor decoration. Additionally, the seeds have medicinal properties and are used in traditional remedies.
