In recent months, the increased demand for North Korean boxwood in northern regions has prompted growers to shift from traditional cutting methods to sowing. However, many are still unfamiliar with the specific techniques involved. Experts have warned that while seedlings grown from seeds have a shorter lifespan compared to cuttings, sowing is most effective between now and September 20th.
Boxwood, a member of the Cyclovirobuxaceae family, is an evergreen shrub known for its hardiness and versatility. It can be transplanted throughout the growing season and can survive temperatures as low as -35°C. Its ability to tolerate heavy pruning makes it ideal for hedges or shaping into intricate designs.
Zhou Gongchen, manager of Fengyuan Nursery in Donggang City, Liaoning Province, explains that North Korean boxwood can be propagated both by cutting and sowing. With rising demand for this species, sowing is becoming increasingly popular due to its simpler process, higher yield, and better survival rate. He recommends two sowing methods: drilling and spreading.
For the drilling method, the seedbed should be prepared by rearranging the soil and adding about one cubic meter of farmyard manure per acre. The soil is then deeply tilled to create a compacted bed that is 1.2 meters wide. Four furrows, each 5 cm deep and 15–18 cm wide, are dug. After watering thoroughly, a suitable amount of pesticide is applied to protect against underground pests. Seeds are evenly distributed and covered with soil, followed by a layer of straw to retain moisture.
For the spreading method, the seedbed is shaped into a 1.2-meter-wide trough that is 6 cm deep. A mixture of sifted soil and sand is spread over the area. Before planting, pesticides and fertilizers are added to the soil to prevent pests and enhance growth. Seeds are sown evenly at a rate of 30–35 grams per square meter. Afterward, 4 cm of fine sifted soil and 2 cm of sand are placed on top. Finally, the area is watered gently to ensure proper germination.
These methods not only improve efficiency but also help maintain the quality and health of the boxwood plants, ensuring successful propagation for growers.
