New methods for melon grafting

The cultivation of melons is extremely resistant to heavy picking. To ensure the successful cultivation of melons in successive years, grafted seedlings are used in various places for production. The grafting methods used are mostly based on connection methods. The melon growers in Funan County of Hebei Province improved the method of connection and achieved good results.

The pumpkins with strong resistance to diseases and cold resistance were selected as rootstocks. The melons with high yield and good taste were used as scion.

After the two cotyledons of the pumpkin seedlings are fully developed, they are chamfered downwards at 40 angles below the growth point of the pumpkin seedlings, and the growing point of the pumpkin seedlings and one of the cotyledons in the seedlings are cut off. The scions were chamfered at a 30-degree angle from 1 to 1.2 cm below the true leaf, and the melon's tender tip was cut off, so that the length of the scion incision was equal to the length of the rootstock incision. Close the rootstock and scion cuts, then use a grafting clip. Immediately smear the incision with a new high fat film to block the grafting site and increase the survival rate of the scion. Applying a wound can protect the wound and prevent the invasion of bacteria.

With this method of grafting, since only one cotyledon is left on the rootstock, the operation is easy and labor and time are saved. The scion uses the tender tip of the melon seedlings, and the appropriate scion can be selected according to the stem diameter of the rootstock.
