The application of biotechnology in Tianjin for rice genetic modification is moving forward steadily. A series of genetically modified rice varieties are expected to be developed and introduced soon.
Mr. Liu Junyun from the Rice Research Institute explained that the integration of biotechnology into rice breeding has become a key focus. By using transgenic techniques, scientists have successfully incorporated two important genes—the herbicide-resistant *bar* gene and the aphid-resistant *SCK* gene—into indica restorer lines. These genes were originally introduced by the Genetics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. As a result, new restorer lines with enhanced resistance to both herbicides and pests have been created.
The resulting transgenic hybrid rice exhibits multiple advantages, including resistance to herbicides, aphids, and rice planthoppers. This not only improves crop yield but also reduces the need for chemical pesticides, making farming more sustainable.
This year, through extensive laboratory research, scientists have successfully cultivated 5,000 strains of resistant seedlings. These plants are now being tested in Daejeon and are showing strong growth. The evaluation committee from the Tianjin Biotechnology Center Project has given high praise to this project, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to agricultural development and food security in the region.
With continued support and further research, this initiative could mark a major breakthrough in China’s agricultural biotechnology sector, offering farmers more resilient and productive rice options.
