Google founder's annual open letter: To fight death in the future

Release date: 2014-05-19

Beijing time on May 16 morning news, Google CEO Larry Page (Larry Page) today published the company's founder mail on the company's investor relations website. The email reviewed Google’s achievements over the past year and noted that search, multi-screen services, and Internet access are Google’s current focus.

The following is the full text of the article:

Brin and I founded Google because we wanted to "develop a service that would dramatically improve the lives of as many people as possible." We have always adhered to this mission and have invested in long-term development of new technologies that users really love, such as search, Gmail, Maps, Chrome, YouTube, and Android. We have been involved in many fields in a short period of time, so people naturally ask, what is Google today, and where are you going? This is a good question.

search for

Information is at the heart of Google. One of our great motivations is that we believe that the acquisition of information can advance human progress. In childhood, both of us are very curious. I remember that I spent a lot of time reading books and magazines, or taking apart things from home to see how it works. Today, it is easier to find this information. Just go to Google Search. Searching makes sense, because even a little knowledge can make a huge difference, whether it's a seemingly simple but important piece of information for everyday life, such as how to avoid traffic jams, or something more important, such as African farmers. Focus on how to save the potatoes he planted (20.94, -0.44, -2.06%).

User activity in the Google search engine is very active, with more than 100 billion searches per month (and 15% of which we have never seen before), and we are currently updating the catalog in a few seconds to ensure we are up to date. the result of. To make life easier, we begin to provide direct answers to your questions. For example, “What is the deepest lake in the world?” (This is Lake Baikal in Siberia, with a depth of 1741 meters.) Or “When does my flight take off?” In addition, I am happy with the progress of voice search. The service has been supported in more than 38 languages, including the most recent Thai and Vietnamese. Voice is usually the quickest and easiest way to ask questions, especially when you use a mobile device.

In many ways, there is still a long way to go to create a search engine in my dreams. Such a search engine should provide you with the right information at the right time, and you don't have to spend a lot of effort on it. This is partly because deep understanding of information is a difficult problem to be solved. Google Now is trying to solve this challenge. Google Now can provide information without asking questions, so you don't have to open your inbox to find the necessary delivery information, which will appear directly on your screen. Interest-based recommendations on Google+ have also become an important source of information. I always get highly relevant information, such as this YouTube video that recently appeared in my stream about the history of kiteboarding.

Although it is still in the early stages of development, we have made significant progress in understanding people's content. If we want to strengthen human-computer interaction, then this is very important. Please think about your traffic commuting. You need easy-to-access traffic information so you can plan your traffic and avoid traffic jams. If you suddenly need to schedule another item, you will want to get navigation from your current location (rather than manually entering the location on a small screen). The improved content will also make the search more natural, no longer a series of keywords that you manually enter into your computer. We are getting closer and closer to this goal: query the height of the Eiffel Tower and the construction time of the "it". By understanding what "it" stands for in context, we can bring a conversational search.

Living in a multi-screen world

With more and more devices, it's increasingly important to make sure that you can easily use services across devices. Our Chrome browser has 750 million users, which is fast and safe. This browser works seamlessly across devices. Open the map on your desktop and the same tab will open when you transfer to your mobile device, so you can continue browsing.

Take a look at the photos. In a multi-screen world, this is a very bad feature scenario. We store different photos on different devices and it's hard to find or share. This situation is disappointing to everyone. Google+ can upload all of these photos to the web, and you can view them on any device. Even better, if you lose your phone, the photos won't be lost together.

In less than 6 years, more than 1 billion Android devices have been activated (developing very fast). This brings an excellent platform to more and more application developers around the world. It is exciting to see the take-off of this ecosystem. In 2013, the average revenue earned by Android developers through user fees increased more than four times from a year ago. Currently, we are promoting Android to wearable computing devices such as watches, as well as cars. In the car, we can make navigation, making calls and playing music very easy.

The concept of the Google Play online store is similar. With Google Play, you can get apps, movies, eBooks, and music in one place, using it on any device without having to endlessly sync. If you listen to music on your tablet and you transfer it to your phone, the music will still be there (you can see that there is a theme here!). Recently, with Chromecast TV, watching movies from Google Play and Netflix (344.19, -7.69, -2.19%) from your home or in your friend's apartment TV is easy. You can throw away all your TV remotes and use only existing apps on your phone or tablet, such as YouTube, to control your TV. The most gratifying thing is that the price of Chromecast is only $35.

At the moment, if you don't have a good design, it doesn't make sense. I still remember that I studied usability courses at the University of Michigan. Students need to choose a program they are familiar with (I chose an email program) and estimate how long it takes for expert users to complete the various tasks using the program. This made me understand that developing an excellent and efficient interface is very difficult and requires more engineering development than you might think. Here you need a label, where you need a drop-down menu. If you give people more choices (even if they don't use them), they will take longer to learn. People are still talking about the simplicity of Google's homepage, which is an important part of our initial success. There is no reason why this concept cannot be applied to our other products, especially the many devices and options that exist today, as well as many opportunities that may distract people.

Internet access: issues that have not yet been resolved

Of course, all of the above assume that you are one of the 2 billion people who have access to the Internet. This means that there are still 5 billion people around the world who are not yet connected. Despite the large amount of information available, two-thirds of the world's population still lacks the most basic Internet connection, which is a tragedy. Therefore, I am very happy that our team is developing the Project Loon project. The idea is to build a balloon network at the edge of space (flying twice as fast as commercial aircraft) to provide Internet connectivity to rural and remote areas. With Project Loon, we will soon be bringing Internet connectivity in classrooms in northeastern Brazil. As the project evolves, we hope to bring the power of the network to more people, creating opportunities that no one could have imagined before.

Invention and reinvention

If you can get a small, dedicated team to start with the basic principles, rather than being tied to the way you do things, then what you achieve will be very interesting. However, I gradually found that it is difficult for the team to establish a very ambitious goal, because most people lack the "moon landing" way of thinking in the process of receiving education. They are used to thinking that something is impossible and fearful of failure. So we spent a lot of energy, hired independent thinkers within Google, and set ambitious goals. Because, if you hire the right people and bring a bold enough dream, then you can usually achieve it. Even if you end up failing, you will learn important lessons.

There is no doubt that many companies are getting used to doing what they can do, just incrementally. This incremental approach to thinking has become increasingly inappropriate, especially in the technology industry, where changes in the technology industry are often revolutionary, not innovative. Therefore, we are still investing in the long-term development of the next generation of important products. In the medical field, we have Calico. This is a company led by Genetech's former CEO Art Levinson, specializing in healthcare, health and longevity. We also own Iris. This is a smart contact lens that can change the lives of people with diabetes. We also recently acquired Nest, which makes ordinary household items such as thermostats more useful. In addition, we are excited about the new Google Shopping Express courier service, which is a courier service that helps you receive merchandise on the day of order. The same is true for driverless cars (no need to explain!). Today, these ideas seem crazy, but if past experience can guide us how to succeed in the future, then these important bets today will not look strange in a few years.

After setting up Google for 16 years, we only opened the corner of the curtain. In my daily work, Brin and I are excited about the future and the outstanding people who work with us. Google employees make everything possible, they are our future. Although the world will change in a few years, the possibility of bringing changes to the current human life is still driving us, just as we did at the beginning.
