Bio-pesticides should pay attention to the environment

Biological pesticides, also known as bacterial pesticides, are highly effective in controlling pests without harming the environment, humans, or animals. They do not lead to pest resistance and are considered a safer alternative to chemical pesticides. The effectiveness of these biopesticides largely depends on the quantity and activity level of the bacteria. However, their performance is highly sensitive to environmental conditions. To maximize their efficacy, it's important to consider the following factors: 1. **Temperature Control**: The ideal temperature for applying biological pesticides is above 20°C. This is because the active components—protein crystals and living spores—are more effective under warmer conditions. At lower temperatures, spore germination slows down, and protein crystals may not function properly. Studies have shown that at 25–30°C, the effectiveness can be up to twice as high compared to 10–15°C. 2. **Humidity Levels**: High humidity is crucial for the success of biological pesticides, especially when using powdered formulations. Bacterial spores are vulnerable to dry environments, so it's best to apply them during early morning or late evening when dew is present. This helps the product stick better to plant surfaces, increasing the chances of pest contact and spore propagation. 3. **Sunlight Exposure**: Ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun can damage spores and reduce the effectiveness of parasporal crystals. To minimize this risk, it’s recommended to apply biopesticides after 4 p.m. or on cloudy days. Adding substances like crude sugar or corn seminal plasma can help protect against UV degradation. 4. **Rainfall Conditions**: Heavy rain shortly after application can wash away the pesticide from leaves, reducing its effectiveness. On the other hand, light rain occurring 5 hours after spraying can actually enhance performance by promoting spore activity and speeding up pest mortality. In addition to these factors, proper storage and handling of biopesticides are equally important. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions and ensure that the product remains viable until use. With careful consideration of environmental conditions, biological pesticides can offer a sustainable and efficient solution for pest management.
