Precautions for purchasing watermelon seeds
Choose watermelon varieties according to local ecological conditions and market demand.
Check that the seed size, color, shape, uniformity, and fullness match the seed characteristics.
Also pay attention to the seed storage time, the storage period of watermelon seeds under normal temperature conditions is 2~3 years, and the seeds should not be selected for more than 3 years.
Seed treatment before sowing
Before the seedlings are planted, the seed treatment mainly includes the steps of seed selection, sun-breeding, seed disinfection, soaking and germination.
Seed selection, sieving before seed treatment to remove unfilled seeds.
Sun-breeding, before planting, choose sunny, from 9:00 to 15:00, in the sun for 1 to 2 days, the role is to improve the water absorption and permeability of the seeds.
Disinfection, usually by wet heat treatment and pharmaceutical treatment.
Wet heat treatment, including warm soup soaking and hot water scalding.
(1) Soaking in warm soup: Dip the seeds into hot water at 55 °C (two portions of boiling water to one portion of cold water) and keep stirring. Keep the water temperature at 55 °C for 15 minutes, then let the water temperature naturally decrease, and then continue soaking for 6-8 hours. This method can kill the bacteria on the surface of the seed and can also passivate the virus.
(2) Hot water scalding: When hot water is boiled at 75 °C, the hot water is poured back and forth until the water temperature is lowered to 55 °C, and the water temperature is kept constant for 7-8 minutes. After the same as the warm soup soaked.
The drug treatment is generally carried out after seed soaking, and the main treatment is as follows.
(1) 50% carbendazim wettable powder 500 times liquid soaking for 1 hour or 40% formaldehyde aqueous solution 100 times liquid soaking for 20 to 30 minutes, can prevent anthracnose and blight.
(2) Soaking the 2%~4% bleaching powder solution for half an hour can kill the bacteria on the surface of the seed.
(3) Soaking seeds at the corresponding concentrations of sodium hydroxide, trisodium phosphate, dasenium, potassium permanganate, copper sulfate, etc., can passivate the virus on the surface of the seed.
Note: The soaking of the liquid must be strictly controlled and the soaking time. Before the seeds are immersed in the syrup, they should be immersed in clean water for 3-4 hours. After soaking the agent, rinse the seeds repeatedly with clean water until there is no odor.
How to germination of watermelon seeds
During the soaking process of warm soup, the seeds should be washed and replaced once, and the mucus on the surface should be washed to facilitate seed germination.
After soaking seeds, remove the seeds and wrap them in a wet towel or gauze. Place them at 28~30°C for germination, and wash them once every 6~8 hours with 25°C water. After 1~2 days, most of the seeds can be sown when they are white.
