Red textured grass

Family: Acaciaaceae, a perennial evergreen grass

Morphological Characteristics:

The plant features oblique branches that do not grow upright. Its leaves are small, measuring 1.5 to 2 cm in length, with silvery-white veins running through them.

The red reticulate grass is known for its striking red veins, which are very distinct and serve as the main ornamental feature. It produces small yellow flowers with an erect inflorescence, typically blooming between April and June. In addition to the red variety, white reticulate and lobular white reticulate forms are also commonly cultivated.

Origin:

This plant is native to the rainforests of Peru and other regions in South America.

Growth Habits:

Red reticulate grass thrives in warm, humid, and semi-shaded environments. It is sensitive to cold and drought, with an ideal growth temperature range of 20–25°C. While it isn’t overly particular about soil type, it prefers loose, fertile soil with good water retention. The soil should be well-drained and allow for proper air circulation to prevent root rot.

Care Tips:

It can be placed near pools or other high-humidity areas. During dry weather, you can cover the plant with a glass jar or plastic bag to maintain high humidity, but make sure the air doesn’t come into direct contact with the plant. When temperatures rise, ensure it is shaded and ventilated properly. Once moved indoors during winter, keep the temperature above 15°C to avoid frost damage. Watering during this time should be done carefully, using water at room temperature to prevent shock. Keep the soil consistently moist, and consider covering it with a plastic bag to help retain warmth.

In summary, red reticulate grass requires a warm, humid, and shaded environment. A mix of humus, garden soil, and river sand works best. Keep the soil constantly moist and maintain high air humidity throughout the growing season. Apply diluted liquid fertilizer once a month. Place it in a bright area but away from direct sunlight. During winter, maintain indoor temperatures between 12–15°C to ensure safe overwintering.

Varieties:

The var. pearcea variety has crisscrossed brick-red veins on its leaves.

The var. pearceanana variety has slightly smaller leaves with red veins.

'Belosia' (Belle): This variety has large, flat leaves with a light green color and gray veins. Compared to others, the veins are less prominent. White markings appear near the base of the leaves, and occasional white spots may appear along the leaf edges.
