Origin:
Native to Siberia and the Korean Peninsula, this species is also found in northern and northeastern China.
Morphological Characteristics:
A deciduous shrub that typically grows up to 2 meters tall. It has upright, densely clustered stems with smooth bark that turns bright red in winter, creating a striking visual effect. The older branches take on a dark red or blood-red hue. The leaves are opposite, ovate-elliptic or broadly elliptic, with a grayish-green upper surface and a pinkish-green underside. In autumn, the leaves turn reddish, adding to its ornamental value. The flowers are small, white or pale yellow, appearing in late spring or early summer in cymes. The fruits are round drupes, milky or blue-white in color, ripening from August to October.
Growth Habits:
This plant is highly adaptable and thrives in a variety of conditions. It is cold-tolerant, drought-resistant, and can withstand pruning. It prefers full sun and well-drained, loose, fertile soil.
Cultivation and Care:
1. Tatarian Dogwood is very hardy and can be planted in most regions. For best results, provide it with well-draining soil and regular watering during dry periods.
2. When planting, add 10–15 kg of compost per hole as a base fertilizer. Apply top dressing in spring and autumn to maintain healthy growth.
3. Prune in early spring to remove old growth and encourage new shoots. This helps maintain the vibrant red stems that make this plant so attractive.
4. If the plant becomes weak or the bark starts to look old and rough, it's time for renewal. Cut back to 1–2 buds at the base, and allow new shoots to grow. Once they're established, you'll have a fresh, healthy plant.
5. Propagation can be done through cuttings, sowing, or layering.
- Cuttings: Take 1–2 year-old healthy shoots in late fall, root them in sand, and transplant in March. Fertilize monthly after rooting.
- Sowing: Seeds should be sown in spring after stratification in sand for 120 days.
- Layering: In early May, bend a low branch to the ground, cover part of it with soil, and after roots form, separate it from the parent plant and transplant in spring.
6. This plant is susceptible to stem rot. To prevent it, spray with 4–5° Baum’s lime sulfur in March and 1:1:200 Bordeaux mixture before the rainy season. In autumn, leaf spot may occur, which can damage the bark and reduce its ornamental value. Treat with 1% dimethoate or 0.5° Baum’s lime sulfur.
