Transgenic insect-resistant cotton, through biological technology, transfers a bacterial DNA fragment into cotton, allowing the cotton bollworm to die once it has been eaten. Dr. Li Fuguang, deputy director of the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that the gene that kills Helicoverpa armigera is derived from a bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis, which produces proteins called crystal proteins. Since the bollworm is an alkaline stomach, once the transgenic cotton is eaten, the protein can be enzymatically cleaved at two specific sites under alkaline conditions, thereby producing toxicity and poisoning the bollworm and other pests. The mammals, including humans, are sour stomachs, and any part of this protein can be enzymatically cleaved by the acidic stomach and converted into beneficial amino acids that can be absorbed and utilized. Experts from China Cotton Institute pointed out that the 21st century is the biological century, and the trait transformation of crops is an important aspect for the development of high-quality and high-efficiency agriculture. At present, all types of genetically modified cotton grown in the United States account for 76% of the total cotton area. GM cotton is currently the only genetically modified crop that is approved for production in China. Transgenic technology can not only resist insects, but also improve cotton fiber quality. Chinese scientific and technical personnel are trying to combine the rabbit hair keratin gene with cotton to produce a new type of cotton fiber with rabbit hair quality.
