Citrus fruit fertilization should pay attention to what

First, it is important to shift from the use of chemical fertilizers to organic alternatives, particularly basic and alfalfa-based cake fertilizers, as well as multiple organic-inorganic compound fertilizers. These organic options not only meet the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium needs of citrus trees at different growth stages but also help replenish essential micronutrients such as magnesium and zinc. By improving soil structure and reducing acidity, these fertilizers enhance nutrient uptake efficiency, prevent or correct nutrient deficiencies, and ultimately boost the sugar content and overall quality of the fruit.

Second, increasing calcium fertilizer application can significantly impact the acidity of citrus soils. Research shows that higher calcium levels in the soil lead to lower acidity, which is beneficial for citrus growth. In our city, most orange orchards are situated on acidic red soils with a pH range of 5.0 to 6.0, and calcium deficiency is quite common. To address this, applying calcium-rich materials like quicklime in early spring is recommended. This practice not only raises the soil’s calcium content but also provides the necessary nutrients for citrus development. A typical application involves spreading 50 to 60 kilograms of fresh lime per acre during spring to effectively reduce soil acidity and improve growing conditions.

Third, adopting a soil testing and fertilization approach based on actual nutrient levels can greatly optimize fertilizer use. Since citrus trees have varying nutrient requirements depending on their growth stage and each orchard has different soil fertility levels, conducting regular soil tests allows for targeted and precise fertilization. This method ensures that only the necessary nutrients are applied, preventing over-fertilization and reducing input costs while enhancing both fruit quality and yield. It is a sustainable and economically efficient strategy for long-term citrus cultivation.
