This plant thrives in a sunny, warm, and humid environment with good air circulation. It prefers temperatures between 8°C and 10°C during winter and avoids cold conditions. The soil should be well-drained, sandy, and rich in nutrients to support healthy growth.
Propagation is typically done through cuttings. From April to May, select thick, two-year-old branches or one-year-old semi-woody shoots that are strong and vigorous. Cut each cutting to about 10–15 cm in length, leaving the top leaves intact. Before planting, the cuttings are first washed using a panning method, then rinsed and sterilized with boiling water at 100°C. They are placed in a shaded area with humidity above 80% and a room temperature of 18–25°C. After approximately 40 days, roots will develop, and the cuttings can be transplanted. Cuttings with apical buds have a higher survival rate and can also be propagated through bending or grafting techniques.
Once the cuttings have established roots and the shoots reach about 10 cm in length, they can be transferred to pots. Use a neutral potting mix with balanced nutrients. Provide ample light during the growing season, keeping the temperature between 20°C and 28°C. Apply fertilizer every 15 days. When the seedlings reach 15 cm in height, pinch back the tips once or twice to encourage new growth and increase flowering potential. In summer, avoid direct sunlight—provide shade around noon and mist the leaves on hot days. After flowering, prune the plants to stimulate new shoots. In late autumn, move them to a low-temperature greenhouse, ensuring the winter temperature stays above 8°C. Repot every 2–3 years to maintain soil quality.
Common diseases include sooty mold and anthracnose, while aphids are the primary pest. This plant is native to southern China and is widely cultivated in greenhouses throughout Yuanling. Its large, colorful flowers make it an attractive potted plant. In South China, it can be planted in open fields, flower beds, tree beds, or as hedges to enhance the landscape. The leaves, similar to mulberry leaves, are also used in various garden applications.
