Fuso cultivation and management

This plant thrives in a sunny, warm, and humid environment with good air circulation. It does not tolerate cold temperatures, and the ideal winter temperature is between 8-10°C. The soil should be fertile, well-drained, and sandy to ensure proper root development. Propagation is commonly done through cuttings. From April to May, select thick, 2-year-old branches or robust 1-year-old semi-woody shoots that are about 10-15 cm long. Leave the top leaves intact to support photosynthesis. Before planting, the cutting material should be washed thoroughly, then rinsed and sterilized with boiling water at 100°C to prevent disease. Place the cuttings in a shaded area with humidity above 80% and maintain a room temperature of 18-25°C. After approximately 40 days, roots will develop, and the cuttings can be transplanted. Cuttings with apical buds have a higher survival rate and can also be propagated by layering or grafting. Once the cuttings have established, they can be potted when the shoots reach about 10 cm in length. Use a neutral potting mix enriched with appropriate nutrients. Provide ample light during the growing season, keeping the temperature between 20-28°C. Apply fertilizer every 15 days to promote healthy growth. When the seedlings reach 15 cm in height, pinch back the tips 1-2 times to encourage new growth and increase flowering potential. In summer, avoid direct sunlight—provide shade around midday and mist the leaves if they become too hot. After flowering, prune the plants to stimulate new shoots. In late autumn, move them to a low-temperature greenhouse for winter protection, ensuring the temperature stays above 8°C. Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and support continued growth. Common diseases include sooty mold and anthracnose, while aphids are frequent pests. Regular monitoring and proper care can help prevent these issues. Native to southern China, this plant is widely cultivated in greenhouses across Yuanling. Its large, colorful flowers make it an attractive potted plant. In South China, it can be planted in open fields, flower beds, tree beds, or as hedges to enhance the landscape and add beauty to outdoor spaces.
