1. Check the milk's appearance: Milk that is manually squeezed out tends to be honey-colored, paste-like, and does not flow easily—this usually indicates a pregnant cow. On the other hand, if the milk is white and flows naturally, it likely comes from an empty (non-pregnant) cow.
2. Observe the udder: A pregnant cow will have a noticeably swollen udder with a straight, firm nipple. If the udder is not swollen and the nipples are soft or not erect, the cow is probably not pregnant.
3. Examine the eye: A pregnant cow has three distinct, vertically aligned blood vessels visible just above the pupil on the iris—these are known as pregnancy vessels. They appear raised, purple-red, and prominent. Non-pregnant cows have smaller, less visible blood vessels on the iris.
4. Look at the mouth: Open the cow’s mouth and check the sublingual area on both sides. If the tissue is bright red, the cow is likely pregnant. If it appears pink or light red, the cow is probably not pregnant.
5. Apply pressure to the abdomen: Stand on the left side of the cow, facing its back. Use your left hand to support the cow’s rear, and gently press on the left side of the belly with your right hand. If you feel something moving or see movement inside the belly, it suggests the cow is pregnant.
6. Perform an alcohol test: Take 100 ml of fresh milk in a clean container and add 1 ml of 95% medical alcohol. Mix well and wait for 5 minutes. If the milk clumps or forms curds, it indicates the cow is pregnant. If no clumping occurs within 5 minutes but happens after 30 minutes, the cow is likely not pregnant.
7. Observe the tail: A pregnant cow will often keep its tail still and not flick it around. If you cover the vulva and move the cow slightly to the left or right, the tail should remain in place. If the tail lifts vertically when covered, it may indicate the cow is not pregnant.
These traditional methods, while not always 100% accurate, can provide farmers with quick and practical ways to assess a cow’s pregnancy status without the need for advanced technology. However, for more reliable results, it's always recommended to use veterinary services or modern diagnostic tools like ultrasound or blood tests.
