1. Check the milk: When you manually express milk, if it comes out as a honey-colored, paste-like substance that doesn't flow easily, it's likely from a pregnant cow. On the other hand, if the milk is white and flows naturally, it probably comes from a non-pregnant (empty) cow.
2. Observe the udder: A pregnant cow will have a noticeably swollen udder with straight, firm nipples. If the udder isn’t enlarged and the nipples are soft or not upright, the cow is likely not pregnant.
3. Examine the eye: Look at the bull’s eye (the white part of the eye). In a pregnant cow, three prominent vertical blood vessels are visible just above the pupil on the iris. These vessels appear as raised, purple-red lines on the surface of the iris. In non-pregnant cows, these blood vessels are smaller and less noticeable.
4. Check the mouth: Open the cow’s mouth and look at the sublingual tissue on both sides. If it’s bright red, the cow is likely pregnant. If it’s pink or light red, the cow is probably not pregnant.
5. Apply pressure to the abdomen: Stand on the left side of the cow, facing its back. Use your left hand to support the cow’s rump while gently pressing on the left side of the belly with your right hand. If you feel something moving or touching your hand, or if you can see movement inside the belly, it suggests the cow is pregnant.
6. Perform an alcohol test: Take 100 ml of fresh milk and pour it into a clean glass container. Add 1 ml of 95% medical alcohol and mix thoroughly. Wait for 5 minutes. If the milk clumps or forms curds, it indicates the cow is pregnant. If no clumping occurs within 5 minutes but happens after 30 minutes, the cow is not pregnant.
7. Observe the tail: A pregnant cow will often hold its tail still and not flick it. If you cover the vulva and the cow moves its tail to the left or right, it may be pregnant. However, if the tail remains vertically upright when covered, it’s a sign that the cow is not pregnant.
These traditional methods, though not always 100% accurate, have been used by farmers for generations to estimate whether a cow is pregnant. For more precise results, modern veterinary techniques like ultrasound or blood tests are recommended.
