According to the data released by the Central Bank of Kenya in its report on economic performance in May, the amount of sugar cane harvested in Kenya fell by 9.8% to only 5.32 million tons in the first four months of 2012; sugar production was 557,145 times the same period of last year. Tons fell by 17.1% to only 461,765 tons.
The Central Bank of Kenya believes that the abnormal weather this year affected the production of sugar cane is the main reason leading to the lag of sugarcane and sugar production in Kenya in the first four months of this year.
At present, there are eight sugar refineries in Kenya, which produce about 550,000 tons of sugar each year. Kenya consumes about 800,000 tons of sugar each year, and a supply gap of nearly 300,000 tons is imported from the Eastern Union and the South African Trade Common Market.
