The best effect of artificial insemination in young sows

The BQP farm has a young sow breeding unit that has been successfully operating for several years, periodically and systematically, to provide breeding sows for pigs kept outside the farm on a regular basis. Among the 1400 PIC Camborough 12 sow mates that were paired in the unit, the number of live litters reached an average of 11.4 and the fertility rate reached 90%. What lessons can we learn from their excellent results?

According to farm manager Steve Milnes, to get good results, we must first make preparations. When the young sow enters the farm on the 80th day of age, the body weight is approximately 40kg, and it is fed with a high-quality growing pig diet and is free to feed until 19 weeks of age. At this point the average weight will reach 70kg. Then feed a special young sow diet with a limit of 2.75kg. This specialized diet can provide young sows with additional mineral elements, vitamins and lysine on the one hand, and it does not make young sows grow fat on the other. In order to allow young sows to meet breeding requirements on schedule, they need to be intensively reared in accordance with established goals - the target weight is 130kg (average 135kg), the target for age is 230 days (average 235 days), P2 backfat thickness should be 18-22mm. Steve Milnes believes that if young sows are to have a long production life in their homes in the future, and the first child has achieved good results, then they should be in good condition when they are first assigned. Young sows were purchased at planned intervals to ensure that each batch had enough sows to reach the breeding weight. A total of seven batches, a breeding cycle of three weeks. Each batch must ensure sufficient number of young sows, so that naturally mature sows suitable for breeding can meet the needs of the need to use hormones for estrus adjustment.

Initially, 250 young sows were purchased first. Three weeks before the expected breeding date, on Friday, 8-10 heads of porcine boars were excised into the sow herd to stimulate estrus. Experience shows that 60% of the young sows show off their reflexes between the following Sunday and Wednesday. The gilts that exhibit their affections are transferred out and regrouped in groups of 25. Each group includes two boars with vasectomy. , with the sow for a week. The young sow feed was then used for pre-breeding feeding, with a feed rate of 4 kg per head.

Four days before the estrus is expected to be in the estrus period, the sows are transferred to the field near the breeding area on Fridays. The trial boars were returned to the sow herd and kept together for 24 hours to stimulate estrus. From Monday onwards, sows are rushed to the breeding shed every day and are in snort contact with the boars. On the first day the sows are a little nervous and should give them some time to calm them down. The first day is unlikely to show a standing estrus, so the sows also have to return to the original group.

The same procedure was repeated the next day and the sow was rushed to the bred side of the boar and checked for static heat. There are three staff members who perform artificial insemination, and each person catches two sows at a time, so it takes about three hours to catch 120 sows.

This work is repeated every day throughout the week. When breeding, at least two inseminations are required for each sow. If the sow is still standing, a third insemination should be performed. After sowing, the sows are divided into groups of 20 each, and each group is driven into a trial boar to calm the sows. After sowing, the dietary level of the sow was kept at 2.5 kg/head for five weeks, and then ultrasound scanning was used for pregnancy examination. Determine the next level of diet based on the results of the inspection.

What are the "secrets" in their success?

Each staff member must take a few minutes of rest after 10-15 infusions to avoid fatigue

Play music and adjust the mood of staff and pigs

Daily storage of semen three times

Sow ducts are used for better sealing and less leakage

Sows must stand when inseminated and staff must simultaneously simulate boar stimulation of the sow’s body

Be patient - give the sow some time to make it quiet and don’t forcibly instil

Continuous illumination with 16 hours of intense white light as an aid to estrus stimulation

Avoid any stress in the sow within five weeks of breeding
