The Status of the Development of Chinese Pig Breeds

Recently, the American Breeding Pig Registration Association and the National Pig Industry Technology Research and Development Center jointly organized the US Breeding Breeding Seminar in Guangzhou. According to Chen Yaosheng, chief scientist of the national hog industry technical system, if China wants to go through the vicious cycle of “introduction-maintenance-degradation-reintroduction,” it must standardize breeding, establish a national core breeding farm, and collect and share data on outstanding pig breeds nationwide.

It is reported that domestic breeding farms have been in a state of poor circulation for a long time, and most of the top core breeder breeding resources rely on imports in the “pyramid” breeding system. In 2011, the number of introduced species in the country exceeded 10,000 heads, which is almost a quarter of the annual replacement of the national core breeder herds. According to Chen Yaosheng, in addition to introduction, some large and medium-sized pig breeding companies in China have joined the NSR (American National Pig Registration Association) and CCSI (Canadian Breeding Pig Registration Association).

At present, there are 14 foreign breeder pig companies in China, many of which operate brands through the industry alliance model. For example, PIC has set up a joint venture breeding farm in Jiangxi Zhengbang and a Waldo-Whiteshire strategic alliance to establish five breeding farms in Guangdong, Hunan, Shandong, and Fujian in the past three years. Por has established joint venture breeding farms in Sichuan, Jiangxi and Chongqing, and Dan Yu breeding and breeding company will also establish a wholly-owned breeding farm in Jiangsu.

Chen Yaosheng believes that breeding relying on foreign breeding systems will inevitably lead to serious dependence and accumulate data resources for others in the long term. This kind of single genetic exchange will delay the breeding performance. Because of the manipulation of core data in the hands of others, it is doomed to fail to surpass others in breeding. Chen Yaosheng also believes that there is not much difference between the domestic breeding industry and the advanced countries in mastering the modern breeding theory. The lack of long-term adherence to the basic work of breeding.

Professor Li Hua, who is engaged in animal genetics and breeding at the Foshan University of Science and Technology, believes that China's dominant resources for breeding pigs have not been fully utilized, and no agency is truly doing breeding work systematically. "China has a wide range of breeding resources and large-scale pigs." This is where foreign countries are very much envious of China, said Li Hua.

Chen Yaosheng said that China's breeding has already taken the first step: It will select 100 national core breeding farms by 2016, and will share the production data on the website of the National Breeding Pig Registration Association. “As of now, the country has selected 37 core breeding farms and distributed 15 provinces and 3 municipalities directly under the Central Government, including 6 in Guangdong, 4 in Guangxi, 3 in Henan, 3 in Sichuan, and 3 in Hubei. The area is obvious.” According to reports, There are more than 3,000 breeding companies in China and it is extremely difficult to select 100 companies. Most breeder pigs generally do not pay attention to the basic work of breeding, most of them stay on the surface to cope, and generally there is no performance measurement data that meets the requirements; there are very few companies that measure more than 2,000 valid data per year. Measurement data have not been truly used. Enterprises that can use the measurement data specification are even rarer. The genetic exchange between farms is almost empty, and only a few unsustainable breeding pigs exchange, and most of them are still unable to track.
