Winter flower taboos

One common mistake is keeping the room temperature too high. Many flowering plants enter dormancy or semi-dormancy during winter, needing rest to prepare for the next growing season. Whether placed in the living room or on the balcony, the temperature should be maintained between 4-8°C for plants that require dormancy, and no higher than 10°C. When temperatures are too warm, plants may remain active, causing leaves to sprout or buds to develop. This uses up energy that should be reserved for future growth, which can severely harm the plant’s health in the coming year. Examples of such plants include Gardenia, Jasmine, Orange, Plum, Fig, Pomegranate, Grape, Hawthorn, Papaya, Apricot, Peach, Apple, Honeysuckle, Orchid, Cymbidium, and many others.

Second, overwatering is another big mistake. During dormancy, a plant's physiological activities slow down significantly, and it requires very little water to survive. Excessive watering can lead to root rot and weaken the plant. It's best to keep the soil slightly moist but not wet.

Fertilizing during dormancy is also unnecessary and potentially harmful. Applying fertilizer at this time can cause nutrient burn and damage the root system. It's better to wait until spring when the plant starts to come out of dormancy before resuming regular feeding.

Third, avoid dry air. In northern regions, the air tends to be very dry during winter, which can negatively affect indoor plants. Low humidity can cause leaf tips to brown and hinder overall growth. Some plants, like Camellia, Rhododendron, Anthurium, Orchids, Chrysanthemums, Asparagus, and Shichangpu, need a humidity level of at least 80%. Others, such as Bletilla, Hibiscus, Cyclamen, Rubber Tree, Monstera, and Cactus, prefer around 60% humidity. If the air is too dry, misting the leaves or using a humidifier can help maintain the right moisture level.

Lastly, don't neglect sunlight. Even during dormancy, plants need some light—ideally at least 3 hours of direct or indirect sunlight per day. Placing them in dark corners can lead to weak growth and poor blooming in the following season. Even leafless woody plants benefit from exposure to light. Keeping them in low-light areas for long periods is not recommended.
