On January 13th, Abbott, a world-renowned health care and medical research giant, announced that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire Advanced Medical Optics (AMO). AMO has a leading position in ophthalmic care, ranking first in the field of laser ophthalmic correction surgical equipment and second in the field of cataract surgery equipment. The acquisition amounted to $2.8 billion, and the deal will give Abbott a long-term stable growth platform with an annual sales increase of $1 billion.

Through AMO, Abbott has expanded its market for diverse medical devices and achieved its leading position," Miles D. White, president and CEO of Abbott, said, "In addition, Abbott's global organization will drive market growth, especially in the international market, where more people will use advanced eye care equipment and products."
