Researchers at the University of Louis Pasteur reported in an electronic version of the British Journal of Oncogene published on the 17th that 500,000 women worldwide suffer from cervical cancer each year, 80% of whom live in developing countries. The disease is mainly transmitted through sexual behavior, and the chief culprit is the human papillomavirus (HPV).
According to reports, HPV virus will produce two kinds of gene proteins, named E6 and E7, respectively. The researchers found that E6 leads to the proliferation of cancer cells, but when it mutates, it begins to inhibit tumor formation. The research team believes that although this variation is trivial, it can completely change the nature of E6.
Louis Pasteur said that the current main treatment for cervical cancer is vaccination, but its price will discourage some patients in developing countries. In addition, for women who are already ill, the vaccine does not help, so they hope to use this discovery to develop a specific drug that can treat cervical cancer.
