Watermelon seedling transplanting plays a crucial role in achieving early maturity and high yield, as it helps develop strong and healthy seedlings. Therefore, cultivating robust seedlings is the foundation for a successful watermelon harvest. Proper care during the seedling stage ensures that plants are well-prepared for field growth and can better withstand environmental stresses.
First, tall seedlings, also known as "leggy seedlings," are a common issue. These seedlings exhibit thin, elongated stems, pale leaves, small and weak cotyledons, and overall poor growth. The primary causes include excessive humidity, high temperatures, insufficient light, or overcrowding in the seedbed. Due to inadequate nutrition, these seedlings grow slowly, have small and fragile leaves, and are prone to falling over. They are weak, less resilient, and more likely to suffer from diseases or die prematurely.
To prevent leggy seedlings, proper temperature and humidity control are essential. During the seedling stage, maintain daytime temperatures between 25°C and 32°C, and nighttime temperatures between 15°C and 18°C. Keep humidity levels around 40% to 60%. If the seedbed is too wet, improve ventilation or sprinkle fine soil on the surface to reduce moisture. In the later stages, adjust the seedlings based on weather conditions and their development, ensuring they are not overwatered or overfed.
Second, rigid seedlings, often referred to as "aging seedlings," are another problem. These seedlings show signs of stunted growth, with short stems, thick and small cotyledons, dark green coloration, and underdeveloped roots—sometimes even lacking lateral roots. This condition is usually caused by low seedbed temperatures, overly dry or compacted soil, excessive fertilizer application, or using old or dried seeds. Poor root development leads to slow growth after transplanting and reduced plant vigor.
To avoid rigid seedlings, select high-quality, fresh seeds that are vigorous and full of life. Prepare nutrient-rich soil with precise proportions and mix it thoroughly. Maintain suitable temperature and moisture levels. If rigid seedlings appear, apply a diluted compound fertilizer solution carefully, avoiding high concentrations that could burn the roots. Also, avoid watering during rainy periods to prevent excess moisture and root damage.
By paying close attention to seedling care, farmers can significantly improve the quality of their watermelon crops, leading to better yields and healthier plants in the long run.
