Watermelon malformation seedlings prevention and cure

Watermelon seedling transplanting plays a crucial role in achieving early maturity and high yield, as it ensures the development of strong and healthy seedlings. Cultivating robust seedlings is therefore the foundation for successful watermelon production. Proper care during the seedling stage directly impacts the overall growth and productivity of the crop. First, let's discuss tall seedlings. These are characterized by elongated, thin stems, pale coloration, small and delicate cotyledons, and a generally weak appearance. This condition usually occurs due to excessive moisture, high temperatures, insufficient light, or overcrowded conditions in the seedbed. Because of poor nutrition, these seedlings grow slowly, have small leaves, and are prone to falling over. They lack resilience and are more susceptible to diseases or death. To prevent this, it's important to manage temperature and humidity effectively. Maintain daytime temperatures between 25°C and 32°C, and nighttime temperatures between 15°C and 18°C. Keep humidity levels between 40% and 60%. If the seedbed becomes too wet, ensure proper ventilation or sprinkle fine soil on the surface to reduce moisture. In the later stages, adjust the seedlings based on weather conditions and their growth progress. Second, we have rigid seedlings, often referred to as "aging seedlings." These appear when the soil has been dry for too long, leading to slow growth after transplanting. The young stems are short, the cotyledons are thick but small, and the leaves appear dark in color. The roots are short, underdeveloped, and may lack lateral roots. This issue typically arises from low seedbed temperatures, overly dry or compacted soil, over-fertilization, or the use of old or dried seeds. To address this, select fresh, high-quality seeds with good germination potential. Prepare nutrient-rich soil using the correct proportions and mix thoroughly. Ensure optimal temperature and moisture levels. If rigid seedlings develop, apply a diluted compound fertilizer solution, avoiding high concentrations. Also, avoid watering during rainy periods to prevent root burn or excess moisture. With proper care, these seedlings can recover and grow into strong, healthy plants.
