Cherry tree cultivation management measures

1. Pruning. Sweet cherry is a light-loving tree species. To ensure good air circulation and light penetration throughout the tree, some overlapping main branches or those that are not close to the main trunk should be removed early on. Avoid overcrowding the main branches. Trim upright and lateral shoots appropriately to encourage new growth and the formation of new branches. This helps maintain a balanced and healthy structure. 2. Branch Spreading. In mid-August, perform branch spreading on thick branches that haven’t softened well. This technique is more effective on autumn growth than on spring or summer shoots. It promotes even bud development and reduces the number of upright branches. To ensure full branching, it's recommended to spread the branches before and after the autumn equinox, which also helps the tree survive the winter more safely. 3. Weeding and Herbicide Application. After rainfall, apply a diluted mixture of herbicides to control weed growth. Be careful to avoid spraying directly onto the leaves to prevent phytotoxicity. This method ensures that weeds don't compete with the cherry trees for nutrients and water. 4. Soil Fertilization. At the beginning of September, apply top dressing using 0.5 kg of fruit tree-specific fertilizer mixed with potassium sulfate in a 4:1 ratio. Add 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate to each spray to protect the late-season leaves. In late October, apply basal fertilizer by mixing human manure, cow dung (or chicken manure), and sand. Apply 50 kg per plant, placing it 1.5 meters away from the trunk. Water thoroughly after each application. Once the soil is no longer sticky after autumn fertilization, till the entire garden to improve soil aeration and promote root development.
