The main causes of peach rot disease include freezing damage and improper management practices, as well as excessive fertilization and prolonged autumn rainfall. These factors can delay the dormancy of peach trees, reducing their cold resistance. To effectively prevent and manage this disease, the following measures are recommended:
First, strengthen tree health to prevent disease.
(1) Implement reasonable fruit load: Adjust the number of fruits based on the tree's fertility and nutrient levels to avoid overburdening.
(2) Increase fertilization and irrigation: Focus on organic fertilizer, along with phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrient fertilizers. While nitrogen should not be neglected, it should be used in moderation.
(3) Protect leaves and promote root development: Timely control of diseases and pests that cause early leaf drop is essential for maintaining tree vitality.
Second, focus on tree protection.
(1) Prevent freezing and sunscald: Apply tree maintenance products to protect against winter damage. Use whitewash on trunks to reduce temperature fluctuations between day and night.
(2) Treat wounds properly: For large cuts, smooth the area and apply a general tree dressing to disinfect and protect the wound. Products like varnish, thiophanate ointment, or S-921 bactericide can also be used. For larger lesions, bridge them once healed to prevent further infection.
Third, promptly treat affected areas.
(1) Remove bark: Peach rot typically affects the outer layer of the bark. Before spring growth begins, scrape off the infected areas and apply a tree emulsion to speed up healing and prevent further decay. A mixture of 7 parts thiophanate-methyl wettable powder and 2.5 parts vegetable oil can also be applied. Alternatively, use an 843 recovery agent solution to reduce the risk of recurrence.
(2) Spray tree solutions: Applying a general tree spray helps with sterilization, heat retention, frost protection, and prevention of bark-related diseases.
By implementing these strategies, growers can significantly reduce the occurrence of peach rot and maintain healthier orchards. (China Plant Protection Network: Wei Linfei)
