Sorghum-Sudan grass is a cross between sorghum and Sudan grass, known for its high yield and adaptability. It's an annual forage crop that shows strong resistance to drought, making it ideal for various growing conditions. In recent years, China has imported *Sorghum bicolor* (commonly referred to as S. sinensis) from abroad to meet the rising demand for high-quality forage. With numerous varieties available, selecting the right type has become crucial for farmers aiming to maximize both quality and productivity.
The growth cycle of Sorghum-Sudan can be divided into two main phases: vegetative growth and reproductive growth. During the vegetative stage, the plant develops rapidly, with increased stem height, leaf count, and tiller production. This phase is ideal for harvesting, as the forage remains tender, nutritious, and highly palatable. However, once the plant enters the reproductive stage, growth slows down, and more energy is directed toward seed development. The stems and leaves begin to harden, leading to a decline in forage quality. To maintain the best quality, farmers aim to harvest before this transition occurs.
Based on their maturation time, Sorghum-Sudan varieties are generally categorized into three types: early-maturing, photoperiod-sensitive late-maturing, and photoperiod-insensitive late-maturing. Early-maturing varieties typically enter the reproductive stage around 65–80 days after planting. These are often harvested at the booting stage, offering good regrowth potential and multiple cutting opportunities. While their yield may be lower than later varieties, their forage quality is excellent, with a high leaf-to-stem ratio and consistent supply of fresh feed.
Photoperiod-sensitive late-maturing varieties behave like short-day plants, requiring daylight to be reduced to 12 hours and 20 minutes or less for heading and flowering. In northern regions of China, where autumn days are shorter, these varieties can remain in the vegetative stage for up to 160 days or more, producing large quantities of high-quality forage. Varieties such as Picesetter Plus and Pacemaker are specifically bred for this trait, ensuring they don’t flower prematurely when planted in spring. They require longer daylight periods to avoid early heading, which makes them suitable for specific planting windows.
The third category includes photoperiod-insensitive late-maturing varieties, which are not affected by day length. These varieties typically head out 90–100 days after emergence, regardless of sunlight duration. Their yield is about 25% higher than traditional varieties and comparable to photoperiod-sensitive types. They offer greater flexibility in planting and harvesting schedules, allowing for multiple cuts and better management of forage supply throughout the season. This adaptability makes them a popular choice among farmers looking for reliable and high-yield forage options.
