In hydroponic flower cultivation, maintaining appropriate temperature is crucial for their survival during the winter. The ideal temperature range for most hydroponic flowers is similar to that required in traditional soil-based growing—typically between 18°C and 25°C. These plants are not cold-tolerant, and when temperatures fall below 10°C, growth may slow down or even stop completely. Leaves can lose their shine and vitality. If the temperature drops further, below 5°C, many foliage plants can suffer serious damage, such as leaf scorching, yellowing of older leaves, wilting, and in severe cases, death.
If you don’t have access to heating systems or temperature control equipment, it’s best to choose hardier species that can tolerate a wider range of temperatures. Examples include Monstera, Calla Lily, Ivy, Tiger-limited Evergreen, and Clivia. To help maintain warmth, you can use discarded foam boards, cut them to fit your hydroponic containers, and wrap them around the vessels. When indoor temperatures drop below 10°C, cover the containers with old newspapers or plastic sheets. Alternatively, you can raise the water temperature to around 18°C–25°C to provide some warmth to the roots.
During winter, when room temperatures fall below 10°C, most hydroponic flowers enter a dormant or semi-dormant state. At this time, it's advisable to stop using hydroponic nutrient solutions and only use tap water. Make sure to change the water regularly—ideally every 10 to 15 days. Keep the water temperature around 18°C to 25°C, and clean the plant roots and growing containers to prevent buildup and root rot. If the water remains clean and pure, you can extend the interval to 15 to 20 days, or even up to 30 days without harming the plants.
For those hydroponic flowers that continue to grow slowly, such as Kaffir Lily or Calla Lily, you can apply a diluted nutrient solution once every 10 to 15 days to support their health and development. This careful management helps ensure your plants remain strong and healthy throughout the colder months.
