I. Radish Bud Growth Conditions

Radish is a semi-cold-season vegetable that thrives best in temperatures between 15-20°C throughout its growth cycle, with an ideal germination temperature around 20°C. In protected cultivation, heating systems are essential during the winter months to maintain optimal conditions, while shade nets are necessary in the summer to prevent overheating and ensure consistent year-round production. Moisture is also a crucial factor in radish sprout cultivation, with air humidity ideally maintained at about 80%. The seedling trays must remain consistently moist but should not hold standing water. Radish sprouts do not require strict light conditions, and they can grow well under normal indoor lighting.

II. Seed Selection

As a member of the cruciferous family, radish seeds are relatively large and dark brown, with a dry weight of approximately 20 grams per 1,000 seeds. For commercial production, it's important to select high-quality seeds from the Fengguang generation, known for strong growth potential, good disease resistance, and superior quality. The seeds should be uniform in size, free from damage or disease, and have a germination rate of over 95% to ensure successful sprout development.

III. Soaking and Germination

Before planting, freshly harvested seeds should be sifted to remove any debris. After washing them thoroughly, soak the seeds in clean water for 8 to 12 hours. Rinse them 2 to 3 times with fresh water to remove any impurities. Once soaked, place the seeds on a damp cloth inside a container and allow them to germinate at a temperature of 23-26°C for 24 to 48 hours. This process helps to speed up the sprouting stage and ensures even emergence.

IV. Sowing Methods

Radish sprouts can be grown using either seedling trays or traditional seedbeds. For seedbeds, choose a well-drained, loose sandy loam soil that is rich in organic matter. Prepare the site by tilling deeply and breaking up clods. A small amount of organic fertilizer can be added before sowing. Water the bed thoroughly before planting. Spread the germinated seeds evenly at a rate of about 0.5 kg per square meter, then cover them with 1 cm of fine dry soil. Finally, cover the bed with plastic film to retain warmth and moisture, which will help promote faster growth.

When using seedling trays, first clean and disinfect the trays. Place 1-2 layers of absorbent paper inside, then sow 100-150 grams of seeds per tray. Position the trays on a growing rack and keep them at a temperature of 23-26°C. Within 2-3 days, the sprouts should begin to emerge. Once they reach a height of 0.5-1.0 cm, they can be moved to a more ventilated area.

V. Seedling Care

The ideal temperature for radish sprout growth is between 20-25°C, so maintaining proper insulation is key. After the seedlings emerge, keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Once the sprouts reach about 3 cm in length, reduce watering slightly to encourage stronger growth. Regular misting is recommended to maintain air humidity at around 80%, which supports healthy development. While radish sprouts don't require intense light, they should be placed in a shaded area to prevent sunburn. Monitor the seedlings regularly and remove any that show signs of disease or rot to prevent the spread of pathogens. If disease becomes a problem, a 2000-fold dilution of carbendazim can be used as a preventive measure.

VI. Harvesting and Packaging

After approximately 15-20 days, the sprouts will be ready for harvest when they reach a height of 6-7 cm. Use clean scissors to cut the sprouts just above the soil line. Wash them gently and pack them into small plastic bags or containers for sale. They can also be displayed directly on the market as fresh, ready-to-eat greens. Proper handling and packaging ensure freshness and appeal to consumers looking for nutritious, quick-to-cook vegetables.
