1. Variety Selection: It is recommended to use traditional high-quality rose varieties such as Gansu’s "Bitter Water Rose," Shandong’s "Pingyin Rose," and Beijing’s "Miaofeng Mountain Rose." These traditional roses typically bloom once in late spring or early summer. In recent years, "double-season" or "multi-season" hybrid roses have also become popular, capable of blooming twice a year. Among these, the recently introduced "Dutch Four Seasons Rose" is highly recommended due to its strong fragrance, higher essential oil content, and continuous blooming ability without flowering infertility.
2. Rootstock Selection and Preparation: You can choose wild roses or common garden roses as rootstocks. Before the early spring or early winter budding season, dig up the rootstock, plant it in seedling beds, water it regularly, and cultivate it properly for grafting purposes.
3. Grafting Time: The best time for grafting is before the spring budding period, during the maturation of summer and autumn shoots, or in early winter when the leafhopper buds are fully developed. This ensures successful grafting and better survival rates.
4. Grafting Technique: Select your preferred variety in advance, and begin grafting on a sunny morning after the dew has dried. Choose one-year-old branches with strong growth, full shoots, no diseases, and no damage as scions. Cut the scion using a sharp knife, making a 1 cm long and 0.5 cm wide cut that includes a small piece of wood. On the rootstock, select one-year-old mature shoots about 5–10 cm above the ground and make a similar incision. Align the scion with the rootstock, ensuring the bark matches, and place the bud facing upward. Remove the petiole to expose the bud, then wrap it tightly with plastic tape. The plastic tape should be 0.03–0.06 cm thick, cut into strips that are 20–25 cm long and 1–1.2 cm wide.
5. Post-Grafting Care: After grafting, water the plants immediately, and then water them only when necessary. Apply a spike flat top to store nutrients and promote sprouting. About 7–10 days after grafting, trim the excess growth, leaving 1–1.5 cm above the scion. Usually, remove any axillary buds on the rootstock, allowing only the grafted buds to grow. After 25–30 days, the graft union should heal completely, and the plastic bandage can be carefully removed. Within approximately 30 days, the plant should start to flower. Once ready, transplant the seedlings and monitor for pests and diseases before moving them to the garden.
