Once livestock and poultry consume moldy feed, it can significantly impact their growth and development. In severe cases, it may even lead to poisoning and death, resulting in substantial economic losses for farmers. Here are several effective methods to handle mildly moldy feed:
1. **Removal Method**: For straw or pellet feeds that have become moldy, simply remove the affected and deteriorated parts before feeding.
2. **Washing Method**: For seed-type feeds that are slightly moldy, crush the feed, place it in a container, add 3–4 times the amount of water, stir thoroughly, and change the water twice daily. Continue this process until the soaking water becomes clear.
3. **Drying Method**: This is ideal for large quantities of straw feed. Dry the moldy feed in the sun first, then ventilate and shake it to loosen and remove the mold.
4. **Heating Method**: For baking materials, heating at 150°C for 30 minutes or using a microwave for 8–9 minutes can destroy 48% to 61% of aflatoxin present.
5. **Adsorption Method**: Adding 0.5% clay or zeolite (which contains aluminosilicate) to the feed helps absorb mycotoxins while also promoting animal growth.
6. **De-embryo Method**: Moldy corn often has toxins concentrated in the embryo. Grind the corn into small particles (1.5–4.5 mm), mix with 5–6 times the water, stir, and let the embryo debris float. Remove it by draining or repeating the process several times to reduce toxicity.
7. **Ammonia Treatment**: Suitable for bran feed. Mix 12.5 grams of ammonia per kilogram of feed, seal it in a plastic bag, and let it sit at room temperature (20°C for 7 days or 40°C for 5 days). This can achieve a detoxification rate of over 87.5% or 90%, respectively.
8. **Alkali Cooking Method**: Ideal for seed-like feeds. Mix 100 kg of moldy feed with 3 times the water and 500 g of soda ash or 1 kg of lime. Cook until the feed softens, cool, and rinse with water to remove the alkali before use.
9. **Fermentation Method**: Use Lactobacillus to ferment the feed. The enzymes produced during fermentation help reduce aflatoxin levels. This method not only detoxifies the feed but also enhances its nutritional value and palatability.
It’s important to note that these methods are most effective for mildly moldy feed and should be used in combination with other feeds, not as the main diet. For heavily moldy feed, it's often more practical and cost-effective to dispose of it rather than attempt treatment. Always prioritize the health and safety of your animals when handling contaminated feed.
