Persimmon post-harvest management technology

Fertilization for persimmon trees should be tailored based on soil fertility, tree vigor, canopy size, and fruit yield. As a general guideline, a tree producing 20 kilograms of fresh fruit would require approximately 0.5 kilograms of fermented peanut bran or 0.75 kilograms of 15:15:15 compound potassium fertilizer. The fertilization method can involve either direct application or broadcasting. Winter fertilization, which makes up about 60% of the annual requirement, is typically applied before the leaves fall in winter. This helps the tree absorb and store nutrients effectively, supporting new shoot growth, flowering, and fruit development in the following season. Each tree can receive 0.75 to 1.25 kilograms of commercial decomposed peanut bran or 5 kilograms of composted animal manure, which should be dug into the soil and covered afterward. Deep cultivation and soil improvement are essential for sweet persimmons, as they are deep-rooted trees. A deeper tillage layer encourages deeper root growth, leading to more lateral and fibrous roots that enhance nutrient absorption. After the start of winter, deep plowing combined with garden cleaning and fertilization should be carried out. Over time, the land should be rotated with green manure and organic fertilizers. In each planting area, 100 tons of mud or fertile soil should be added to the tree base. If the soil pH is below 6.0, lime should be applied at a rate not exceeding 100 kg per mu annually to improve soil conditions. Pruning is mainly done during the winter dormancy period, ideally around the winter solstice. The primary goal is to remove dead, weak, or unproductive branches, as well as drooping ones, to maintain tree health and structure. Weed control is crucial for persimmon orchards. From the time leaves fall until the next spring bud appears, all remaining leaves, dead branches, and diseased parts should be removed from the trees. These materials should be cleared and burned to reduce the overwintering sources of pests and diseases, ensuring a healthier environment for the next growing season.
