During late autumn and early winter, covering the musk rat house with a film for insulation can help prolong the secretion time of their musk glands and encourage earlier secretion in early spring. It also helps to avoid the negative effects of high temperatures on the sexual activity of musk rats.
Second, improve feed supply. Feeding fresh vegetables, young grass, and malt in early spring can stimulate sexual recovery in musk rats, enhance the activity of their musk glands, and promote earlier musk secretion. In mid to late autumn, feeding high-quality forage grass and green vegetables can counteract the impact of seasonal changes on nutrition, thus increasing physiological activity. Adding appropriate concentrate feed can further support this process.

Before extraction, ensure thorough disinfection. If the musk gland becomes hard after extraction, it indicates that the procedure was too aggressive—stop the process immediately. The interval between extractions is typically 12–15 days. Weak or sick animals should not be extracted until they recover. Males in mating season or in heat should either stop extraction or extend the interval.
